Project Healthy Grandparents

Project Healthy Grandparents

According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2018 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates, there are approximately 13,000 households in Fulton and DeKalb counties in which grandparents are responsible for the care of grandchildren under the age of 18. Because of the financial and emotional challenges related to raising grandchildren with limited resources, grandparent caregivers frequently disregard their own health needs.

Project Healthy Grandparents (PHG) is housed within the Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing and Health Professions at Georgia State University. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for families in which grandparents are raising grandchildren in parent-absent homes. PHG strengthens grandparent-headed families by providing social work and RN health services, as well as access to community resources. Since its inception in 1995, PHG has served nearly 1058 grandparent-headed households in greater Atlanta, including 2,304 children.
