Dr. Bao-Zhong Wang, associate professor in the Institute for Biomedical Sciences, and Dr. Lei Deng, postdoctoral researcher in the institute, in articles across the nation about developing a universal vaccine to combat influenza A viruses that produces long-lasting immunity in mice and protects them against the limitations of seasonal flu vaccines. The research was also highlighted in stories in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, WEB MD, Healthday, The Miami Herald, Yahoo, among others.

Michael Eriksen, dean of the School of Public Health, in an article about the Food and Drug Administration advisory committee's vote on Feb. 1 on whether to allow Philip Morris to market its IQOS tobacco-heating device in the U.S. as less harmful than cigarettes. Eriksen was also quoted in articles in The Washington Post and Vox, among others.

Rajeev Dhawan, director of the Economic Forecasting Center, in a story about a Wall Street Journal survey of economists that showed President Donald Trump has had generally positive effects on U.S. economic growth, hiring and the performance of the stock market during his first year in office.

Volkan Topalli, professor of criminal justice, in a story about drugs booming in America while statistics show cities are getting safer. The statistics present what appears to be a broad, long-term decoupling of homicide rates and the illegal drug trade in many U.S. cities, a trend that counters conventional wisdom about the origins of urban violence.
